ec/pH meters




The differences you are seeing are due to the different techniques used and
would be expected.  You are doing a 2:1 test and most labs do a saturated
media extract (SME) procedure that is closer to a 1:1.  I am not familiar
with Ohio's procedures, but probably at the time of measurement the salts
are about twice as concentrated in their procedure as in yours.  This does
not mean that one is correct and the other is wrong.  It does cause a
problems if you have a recommended Ec of say 1.5 and do not know if it is
based on a 2:1 or SME test.  It also means that one can not directly
compare their own results with a labs.  However, with time and good records
for a given crop, one should generally know the desired Ec levels for their
test and the lab's.
