January Master Gardener Meeting
I would like to thank all of you who attended the January meeting for
your help with making the new class of Master Gardeners feel welcome!
Special thanks to all of you who told the new folks about your experiences
in the program. I can always count on all of you to help and I am
very thankful for that. You did a splendid job as always!
Other notes from the January meeting:
- Ron Hall reported on plans for the Spring
Swing. It will be held at NEOUCOM on Saturday, May 5th.
Master Gardeners present said they were pleased with last year's format,
so we will continue with that format this year. The committee will
investigate fund-raising options and will report at our February meeting.
Ticket prices will also be determined.
- Committees for the year were established as
follows:
Advanced Training: Clinton Hobbs,
Lesley Reid, Don Shilling
Robinson Memorial Hospital Gardens:
Dick McNett, Ron Hall, Dan Ryan
Extension Gardens:
Rick Strebler, Barney Cooper
Entrance and Front Sign:
Kay McGuire, Ron Hall, Susan Clapp
(If you weren't at the meeting, it's never too late to add your name
to the committee list! Just let me know.)
- Barney Cooper reported on the Happy Day School
Project. He will be meeting with school employees to determine
their needs for the handicapped-accessible children's garden. Don
Shilling and Rick Strebler will also be working on the project. If
you would like to be part of this important community service project,
please call me!
- Don Shilling requested that we order a copy
of the "New Pronouncing Dictionary of Plant Names" for each active Master
Gardener. Those present were in favor of Don's request and Terry
will order the dictionaries.
- Rick Strebler asked that we resurrect a committee
to select new reference/resource materials. Rick will chair the committee.
If you have any suggestions, please let us know.

Portage County Master
Gardener Web Site
Thanks to Mr. Corey Jones and his technical skills, our Portage
County Master Gardener web page has been updated. Links to the Buckeye
Yard and Garden newsletter, the P.E.S.T. newsletter and numerous other
sites are included. Our monthly Sage Post is on-line as is the history
of the Ohio Master Gardener Program. Corey will be adding additional
information and resources as we get them.
Again, we realize that not all of you have access, and perhaps do not
care to have access to the Internet; we certainly respect your choice.
As I have said before, if there is an article or a reference to a web site
that you would like to have in paper form, please just let me know
and I'll get it to you!

the kids and lunch for free! Barney Cooper and I are working
on an exhibit for the parenting fair and could use your help. If
you would like to help with this project, please let me know

New Web Site
For Gardeners
The members of the Ohio Nursery and Landscape
Association (ONLA) have announced the introduction of:
www.BuckeyeGardening.com
This web site will give gardeners
free access to professional advice from green industry experts.
Consumers will be able to log on to www.BuckeyeGardening.com
to access month-by-month gardening advice, or learn which plants prosper
in your region's climate. Web visitors will also find answers to
the gardening question-of-the-month and be able to submit their own questions
for industry experts to answer. A Plant-of-the-Month feature will
highlight a specific nursery product's selling points and appeal.
You will be able to view award-winning landscape projects throughout Ohio.
Also, by entering a home town, zip code or county, you will be able to
locate the nearest garden center or landscape contractor member of the
ONLA. Links will also connect visitors to other non-commercial gardening
web sites.
While the BuckeyeGardening (yes, it's one word)
web site will be available to visitors from around the globe, the advice
and information is geared towards Ohio's climate and growing conditions.
The Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association is
a non-profit trade organization and the only state-wide organization representing
all facets of Ohio's green industry. Offices are located in
Westerville, Ohio.
