Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Laboratory

The Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Laboratory consists of 1,250 square feet of lab space located in rooms 116 and 161 in OSU South Center main building.  Instrumentation for high throughput sample preparation and genetic analysis is available.  The facility performs tissue culture, all standard genotyping and sequencing analyses, documentation, and statistical analysis.  Standard equipment includes such items as ABI DNA Sequencing and Genotyping System, BioRad PTC-200 DNA engine thermal cycler, PCR Sprint Thermal Cycler, high throughput horizontal electrophoresis chambers and vertical electrophoresis chambers with chillers and powerpacks, electronic repeating pipettors, Mettler Balance, Dry Bath Incubator, Boekel Digital Incubator, Vortex Fisher Touch Mixer, Micro R Benchtop Centrifuge, 24-Place Fixed-Angle Rotor, Microliter Tube Adaptor, PCR tube Centrifuge, Neslab Chiller Photodocumentation System, Thermal Printer, IEC General Centrifuge (GP6R), Minipore Rios water purification system, Fisher Isotemp Repfigerator, -20 and -80°C freezers.

Aquaculture Wet Laboratory

3,000 sq. ft. Wet Lab is supplied with ground well water, and has additional pond water supply lines, to control temperatures. The Wet Lab houses a recirculating system with ten tanks (200 × 120 cm) that can be used for rearing fish to maturity. The thirty 3-ft tank systems, twenty four 20'' tanks and sixty-four 12" small aquarium research systems with flow-through well, pond water and temperature controlling system in the Wet Lab will be available for use to the different experiments. A 90-foot greenhouse, supplied with well water, holds over 12 tanks, with total gallon capacity of over 20,000 gallons that can be used for holding broodstocks at different experimental stage and growing-up experiments. A new building with forty-eight 7-ft tanks for broodstocks is under design.

Pond Facility

Two one-acre ponds, 12 quarter-acre ponds, and a 5-acre reservoir are equipped with electrical service (110 and 208 v), and have ½ to 1 horsepower aerators.
