1999 ORNAMENTAL CORN EVALUATION

This Ornamental Corn Cultivar Trial compared 13 cultivars using 3 replicates of each cultivar. Objectives were to evaluate potential ornamental corn cultivars for their suitability in Southern Ohio growing and marketing season.
Methods:
Planting: Cultivars were seeded to the field on June 3, 1999 at Hillsboro, Ohio.
Spacing: Rows were planted on 30 inch row spacing, rows were 15 feet long.
Soil Type: Haubstadt Silt Loam
Fertilizer: Applied 120 lbs. N, 120 lbs. P2O5 and 120 lbs. K2O per according to soil test recommendations.
Weed Control: 3.5 pt/A Eradicane Extra 6.7 E pre plant incorporated on June 2, 1999. Hand hoed and cultivated as necessary.
Pest Management: None
Harvest: October 8, 1999
Results:
Despite the extreme dry contions Southern Ohio received this year overall quality of the ornamental corn was good. Yields from the replicated ornamental corn cultivars ranged from 10196 ears per acre to 3333 ears per acre. Indian Art 185 was the highest yielding cultivar with Wilda’s Pride the lowest yielding cultivar in this years trial. Ear width ranged from Wilda’s Pride had the largest ear width and Indian Art 185 the smallest. RBV 1003 had the longest ear length in this year’s trial. RBV 1012 and Indian Art 101 had multiple marketable ears per stalk.
