This Cabbage Cultivar Trial compared 15 cultivars using 4 replicates of each cultivar.
Objectives were to evaluate performance and quality characteristics of cabbage cultivars
for use in producing fresh market cabbage.
Methods:
Planting: Seeds were planted on April 17 into Landmark 288 deep plug trays with Metromix 360 media. Plants were Field planted on June 28 1998 at Hillsboro.
Spacing: Rows were 5 feet apart, with plants set into twin rows on raised beds at 12 inch spacing between plants in the row and 16 inch spacing between double rows.
Soil Type: Haubstadt Silt Loam
Fertilizer: Applied 120 lbs N, 120 lbs P2O5 and 120 lbs K2O per acre prior to planting according to the soil test recommendations. 20-20-20, (1 lb./100 gal. 8 oz. Per plant w/transplant water)
Weed Control: 2 pt./acre Treflan 4E pre plant incorporated on June 30th, 1998 hand hoed and cultivated as necessary.
Pest Management: 2 qt./acre MVP II & 5 fl. oz./acre Pounce on July 26, 2 qt./acre Sevin XLR on August 10, 2 qt./acre MVP II & 5 fl. oz./acre Pounce on August 21, 1 qt/acre Thiodan 3EC on September 11
Irrigation: None
Results:
Total marketable yields for the replicated cultivars ranged from 18.14 tons per acre (Almanac) to 2.76 tons per acre (Zelox). Weather conditions during the 1998 growing season favored disease development on cabbage grown in Southern Ohio. Cultivars in this trial showed varying symptoms of disease pressure.
