Responsibilities
 
Function Statement:
Develop and implement a research and Extension program in soil and water resources that is relevant to the needs of southern Ohio.  Function as a member of an interdisciplinary research and education team, working to evaluate and disseminate information on crop, soil, and water management practices that are productive, profitable, and preserve soil and water quality.  Special emphasis will be on soil health and quality.
 
Summary Statement:
Develop overall program goals and a plan of work to accomplish program objectives. Evaluate the environmental effects of agricultural practices, especially groundwater and surface-water quality. Evaluate the effects of agricultural management systems on soil quality and long-term soil productivity. Create educational materials, and conduct educational programs on soil and water management and quality, and sustainable agricultural practices for multiple audiences: Extension and other agency personnel, agricultural producers, other landowners, and consumers. Participate in writing external funding proposals to support program goals.
 
Specific Duties (50% research and 50% Extension):
· 35% Define research topics in soil and nutrient management, water quality, and soil physical, chemical, and biological properties; design plan, organize, and conduct experiments; determine appropriate experimental protocols, analytical procedures, and data collection methods; perform statistical analyses, summarize data, evaluate and interpret results; identify OSU faculty and staff with expertise in areas that address important needs of southern Ohio, and collaborate with them on research and Extension projects. · 10% Seek outside funding support by participation in writing and managing grant proposals. · 10% Write for and disseminate research findings for journals, fact sheets, and making national and regional presentations. · 30% Create educational materials, & conduct educational programs on soil, nutrient and water management, and sustainable agricultural practices that are important to the people of Southern Ohio; educational activities will include fact sheets, bulletins, workshops, field days, demonstration plots, and presentations to interested groups and organizations; suitable material includes both original research conducted at the Center at Piketon and applicable results from other locations; cooperation with area producers in on-farm research and demonstration projects will be emphasized to help insure that programs address local needs and issues; collaborate with faculty, staff, and stakeholders in all activities. · 10% Facilitate interaction with the Program Advisory Committee and the Center Liaison Committee; solicit stakeholder input and coordinate program goals and activities with locally identified issues and needs; serve on Center administrative committees and perform other service functions as required for efficient operation of the Centers; market the Centers and their programs to local communities and to other branches of the OSU system, and · 5% Supervise staff and manage program budgets.

Received a $40,000 grant for collaborative Research Partnership between Agrium Inc., and the OSU South Centers. 2002-2006.

Cover crops, composted chicken and diary manures effect on crop yields, weed control and soil quality in soybean-corn rotations. Received $4,000 for 2nd year funding from the OSU/Warner Endowment Fund for Sustainable Agriculture Interdisciplinary Grant Program for On-farm Research. 2002-2004.

Development of a simple test to evaluate water suitability for mixing with pesticides. Received $ 1,000 from the Ohio Fruit Growers Society Research Funding. 2003.

Alternate year bearing trial for thorny blackberries. Received $750 from the Ohio Vegetable and Small Fruit Research and Development Program. 2002.

Phytoextraction of heavy metals with herbaceous and woody plants. $509,851. Research proposal submitted for DOE/EPA joint phytoremediation grant 2003 funding with Drs. Morris Cline (Dept. of Plant Biology, OSU) and Shawn Wright.

Helped to write a North Central SARE 2003 Producer Grant entitled “Cover crops for nitrogen fertilization, weed control, C sequestration, and soil quality enhancement in a wheat-soybean rotation under no-till system” for Ms/ Paul Bapst, Don Counts, and Howard Keppler. Requested grant money: $ 14,050.

Helped to write a North Central SARE 2002 successful producer grant entitled “Agroforestry practices of ginseng and goldenseal in natural stands of hardwood forest trees” for Jack Oxenrider. Received $ 5,800. 2002.
