Scientific evaluation of the condition of soils is also not new, but has been practiced since the beginning of agricultural science. Soil fertility analysis is routine, soils in the U.S. and many other parts of the world have been extensively mapped, and soil surveys and other evaluation tools classify the suitability of soils for agricultural, engineering, and a variety of other uses.
