There also has been a consistent and continuing movement within agriculture that emphasizes the importance of soil-building techniques to preserve or regenerate the soil. These groups stress crop rotations, organic matter additions, and the relationships between healthy soils-healthy crops-healthy animals-and healthy people. Although the claims of some groups may be extreme, there is sound scientific evidence to support the benefits of many of these soil-building processes. Orthodox agricultural science probably deserves criticism for promoting excessive reliance on external inputs to solve crop production problems. At the same time, it is also true that ongoing research in soil science has increased our understanding of fundamental soil processes and their effects on soil health.
