What is new at the present time, in discussions of soil health and soil quality, is a growing appreciation of the diverse functions soils perform in watersheds and ecosystems, an increased awareness of the biological diversity in soils, and an evolving recognition of the importance of soil biology in both agricultural and natural landscapes. In a time of increased public concern about the environment and depletion of natural resources, the fact that soil formation is measured on a geologic time scale makes the preservation of healthy, high-quality soils a matter of widespread concern.
