The Soil Science Society of America has adopted this definition of soil quality, which also is used in slightly modified form by NRCS. Implicit in all soil health/quality definitions is the idea that the most important attributes of a healthy soil will vary, depending upon a value judgement about the primary function of the particular soil. In abbreviated form, soil quality has been defined most simply as “fitness for use” (Pierce and Larson, 1993).
