A portable pH meter, portable conductivity meter, and colorimetric reagent strips for nitrate are used for chemical tests. A cover for the infiltration ring was constructed to permit sampling of air in the headspace. The air sample is drawn through an indicator tube (Draeger tube) that changes color in response to the carbon dioxide concentration. This provides a measure of soil respiration or biological activity. The physical property water-filled pore-space is also an indirect indicator of the suitability of the soil for aerobic biological activity.
