Soils and landscapes are not uniform, and cropping systems also are highly variable. Therefore, no single management practice or group of practices will improve soil health or quality in all cases. Best management practices for improving soil quality will be site- and farming system-specific. However, there is one important generalization that can be made: organic matter plays a key role in almost all soil properties, whether they are physical, chemical, or biological.
