Soil organic matter can be divided into three pools: 1) The diverse array of living organisms, including plant roots, 2) An ‘active’ pool that is readily turned over or decomposed under favorable conditions (a half-life measured in months), and 3) Humus, which is relatively stable and resistant to further decomposition (a half-life measured in hundreds of years).
