Q.A. Training in 2006

March 2006 Edition

Dear Volunteer:
SPRING is just around the corner or so they say!  This time of year does bring thoughts of the new 4-H year and enrollment deadlines.  The early enrollment deadline (for Banner Score Sheet bonus points) was March 1.  The actual Enrollment Deadline is March 15 with  April 1, 2006 as the absolute final deadline.  No enrollment (for fair participation - 4-H, FFA, Girl Scout) will be accepted after the April 1 deadline.

The Super Clinics are history for 2006, hope you were able to attend one of them.  If not, you can attend the next 4-H Committee meeting in April as a make-up session (see details later in this newsletter) for banner points.

March 5-11 is Ohio 4-H Week and we would be interested in knowing what activities your club has planned to celebrate this event.  Also, 4-H Week posters need to be out in the community during this week to promote 4-H.

Sincerely yours,

Judith A. Villard, Ph.D
Extension Educator
4-H Youth Development & Extension County Director

Do you have members who need to enhance their public speaking skills and gain extra coaching for the Public Speaking Contest?  If so, please let them know about the Public Speaking Clinic to be held April 6 at the Longview Center from 7-8 p.m.  Many helpful tips will be shared that evening.

Q.A. Training in 2006
The State of Ohio requires that all Market Livestock  and lactating dairy animal exhibitors must complete “Quality Assurance Training”.  The first such training session will be held  Thursday,  March 13, 7-8 p.m. at the Longview Center.  The second training will be Saturday,  April 1, 9:30 a.m. with the third and FINAL training to be held Thursday, May 4, 7-8 p.m. at the Longview Center.   You must have this training completed or you will not be permitted to show or sell your market livestock.  Again this year, the dairy exhibitors (lactating cows and lactating goats)  are required to attend this Quality Assurance Training.  If you have questions or concerns about this, please call the Extension Office.  ALL QUALITY ASSURANCE TRAINING WILL BE CONDUCTED THROUGH THE OSU EXTENSION OFFICE (this includes 4-H & FFA) !!  See enclosed flyers for additional QA training and other QA qualifiers available in Richland County.

Older Youth News
Want to be a CARTEENS Instructor?
The invitation is still open to become a 4-H CARTEENS instructor.  CARTEENS instructors assist in teaching safety driving information to juvenile traffic offenders.  Their purpose is to help youth make better decisions for themselves and others on the roadways.  The CARTEENS programs are generally held on the last Saturday of every month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.  All older youth (preferably age 14 and older) are invited to come and help with this program.  Our next CARTEENS program is March 25, 2006 at the Longview Center from 9-11:00 a.m.  Instructors need to arrive at the Longview Center by 8:30 a.m.

Junior Fair Board to Meet
The Junior Fair Board will meet March 27at the Longview Center at 6:30 p.m.   Since it has been several months since the last meeting, the agenda will have lots of important information to discuss and share.  Please plan to attend.  If for some reason you are unable to be there, please call the Extension Office (this will give you an EXCUSED absence).

Camp Counselor Training
There will be a Camp Counselor Training session on March 8 here at the Longview Center from 630-8:30 p.m.  Please plan to attend.  Make-up hours for counselor training hours can be scheduled at any time, particularly during school spring break.

Market Turkey Pick-Up
The market turkey poults can be picked up either at the Extension Office or Shelby Vo-Ag Room (whichever you specified on your nomination form) on April 5.  Please have a container to put them in when you pick-up them up.

JL Spaghetti Supper
The annual JL Spaghetti Supper will be held at the Richland Rural Life Center on April 8 from 5-7 p.m.   Each Junior Leader is asked to sell tickets.  Also, pies and cakes will be needed for that evening.  This is a big event, so please sign up to help and to bring pies and/or cakes. Tickets will be available through the Extension Office and JL club members.  The more involved you get in this fund raiser, the more money you will get back to help to defray the cost of the Older Youth Trip this summer.

Plowboy Prom
The Annual Plowboy Prom will be held at the Ohio Union Ballroom in Columbus on March 11, from 7-11:30 p.m.   Do you plan to attend?  Transportation will NOT be provided unless parents volunteer to drive.  (Judy will already be in Columbus for the Ohio Volunteer Conference).  Contact the Extension Office by March 9 if you plan to attend.  Cost is $6/per person.

Lonnie McFarland Scholarship
A $500 scholarship is given annually to a deserving 4-H/FFA  youth who will be entering The Ohio State University in the fall.  The Scholarship Applications are available at the Extension Office and must be returned by March 15. Selection will be made by April 1.

Pre-Vet Day
The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine will be holding an open house for interested high school students interested in a career in veterinary medicine.  Saturday, April 8 is the day of the open house.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Kelly Koren at 614-688-4144 or koren.10@osu.edu for more information.
