Summary of Results at South Charleston

This project was supported in part by a research grant from the Ohio Vegetable and Small Fruit Research and Development Fund. In South Charleston, the cultivars were divided into 2 experiments or size categories. In each experiment, half of the 4 replications were sprayed with a standard chemical disease control program and all plots received standard insecticide applications during the season. There was a significant difference in powdery mildew development on no fungicide plots compared to fungicide treated plots. The varieties HMX 6689, Touch of Autumn and Magic Lantern showed significant resistance to powdery mildew development on the foliage compared to other varieties. One experimental variety (EXT 4620837) showed good tolerance to watermelon mosaic virus (WMV).

The best large sized varieties in terms of tons per acre were:  Autumn King, Gold Gem and Gold Medal. The best medium sized pumpkins were Magic Lantern and Gold Standard. The largest average fruit size (lb per fruit) was observed in varieties: Gold Medal, Gold Rush and Autumn King. A new and appealing small variety with an average fruit size of 4-5 lbs was Schooltime which produced yields of 20 tons/A when planted at a row spacing of 5 feet with 1.5 feet within the row. This spacing produces 8,900 fruit per acre. The tight spacing does encourage earlier powdery mildew development.
