Harvesting cabbage. Cultivating tomatoes, sweet corn, peppers and melons. Some hand hoeing. Black nightshade, galinsoga, giant ragweed, common ragweed, lambsquarter, Johnson grass, wild morning glory, pigweed, fall panicle grass, and nutsedge are the primary weed problems. Some spot spraying. Iriigating, this week to distribute another dose of fertilizer.
Earliest sweet corn in tassle. Corn earworm has been caught in the past two weeks in helio traps. Caught 3 moths this past week June 2 thru 9th. Note- Dr. Welty's recommendation (2004 Ohio Vegetable Production Guide) calls for insecticides to be sprayed every days as the silk grows quite rapidly over the eighty degrees Fahrenheit mark.
Tomatoes are rapidly growing in this warm, wet season. Irrigating nutrients in on a weekly basis for determinate varieties. Some tomatoes are showing signs of: early Blight on lower leaves, Bacteria speck was present on some leaves 10-14 days ago. Largest tomatoes are 3-3 1/2 inches in diameter.
Northeast OH
Things have changed at the farm that we check sweet corn at in Tuscarawas county. As of last week we were showing only 2% of the plants with corn borer feeding. Yesterday, June 9, we were finding an average of 42%.On the farms we checked in Wayne and Summit Counties over the last several days, we are still in the 2-4% range.
CENTRAL OH
Strawberry harvest winding down or finished at several locations. Those with traditional matted row system still have a couple weeks of berries left. Plastic corn just starting to show tassels and there is some plastic corn in silk in west central OH. High quality sh2 sweet corn that is sensitive to cold soils showing good plant stands at several locations. Winter squash, gourd and pumpkin planting continues this week. Summer squash, zucchini and cucumber harvest began this week. Where at planting insecticide treatments are beginning to wear off, there is some cucumber beetle feeding on small immature fruit, especially on those laying on the plastic. The blossom end turns yellow and drops off prematurely. Watermelon and muskmelon plantings responding nicely to the warm weather and have just about covered the plastic mulch.
