Tomatoes and Mechanical Pepper Harvest

Processing tomato research and demonstrations are some of the main focal points. Projects include: efficacy of fungicides, testing new fungicides, IPM control of tomato insects and TOMCAST and other disease control programs.

One of the highlights was a demonstration of a mechanical harvesting of processing peppers. Despite an inch of rain before the tour started, attendees got a good look at how this machine works.

This Pik Rite harvester is a once over picker and can be set up for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.

Here you can see the whole plant and fruit traveling up the belt where the fruit will be separated by rotating fingers.

After fruit are removed from the plant, they go through a sorting area and then up the shoot into the bin.

Fruit in the bin with really minimal damage and suitable for processing. This machine was set up for cucumbers and would produce lees damage if the pepper configuration was in place.
